My Students

Would you ever spend $100 or more for an electronic device and then just toss it into a suitcase, purse, or backpack without making sure it's protected from damage?

We have in excess of 900 students in a suburban grades 5-8 middle school in central Massachusetts which serves two communities.

Due to the nature of the economy, a majority of our students live in dual income middle class families. Outside of school they participate in community sports programs which include football, baseball, softball, and soccer.

My Project

Two months ago I approached the PTO with a request to fund the purchase of 10 Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch Readers. I am thankful that they had enough money still available that they were able to approve my request. Now, with the purchase of these devices, some of my students have become even more motivated more than ever before to read whenever and wherever they are able. In an effort to keep them protected from damage, as much as possible, students are required to keep them in the original packaging at all times when they are not being used. Unfortunately, since the packaging is made of cardboard, they are quickly becoming bent, torn, and otherwise damaged and will soon no longer be useful as a means of protecting the devices. I believe that the long term solution is to cover each screen with a protective film and then place them inside a more durable protective cover.

Your funding of this request will help protect and preserve the quality and usefulness of these readers thus providing my students for years to come with an opportunity to not only read quality books, which by the way don't need to be replaced, but also help more students become familiar with products of a digital age.
