Help me give my students tools to help them calm down when they get overstimulated or need more sensory input. My students need a lot of proprioception and vestibular input. The wagon, vests and blankets will provide that.
A lot of my students need more proprioception (the body's ability to sense movement, action, and location) and vestibular (provides the sense of balance and the information about body position that allows rapid compensatory movements in response to both self-induced and externally generated forces) sensory input so they can reach their calm place where they can learn and focus. Proprioception sense seeking behaviors include weight bearing activities, scooter boards, crawling through a tunnel, animal walks, rolling in a blanket. Vestibular sense seeking behaviors include hyperactivity, constantly being in motion, running, jumping, spinning in circles and not getting dizzy, climbing, being upside down and fast, impulsive or unintentionally rough movements.
Students need to get their basic needs met before they can focus and learn.
If my students are understimulated or overstimulated in either proprioception sense, vestibular sense or both then they are uncomfortable in their own bodies. These tools such as weighted blankets, compression vests, sensory sack and a wagon will help provide the sensory input they need. When my students get the right amount of sensory input they need, they will be able to sit down for longer periods of time, focus more on their work, and learn more effectively.
