Promoting Self Efficacy and Confidence Through the Power of T-shirts
Help me give my students the skills they need to cope with their stress and isolation during this challenging school year through mentorship and sharing their growth mindset through T-shirts.
I teach math in a preK - 8th grade public school where the students are creative and curious. They love to learn and have great school spirit. They actively participate in school functions and are generous. They often volunteer to support our school community by helping teachers and mentor their younger peers. Students are able to build their self-confidence and develop their self-efficacy through their participation in our school community.
The pandemic has forced my students to shelter in and be isolated from their peers and mentors, affecting once active, enthusiastic students to become dispirited.
The lack of interactions with other members of the school community has cause the students to lose their motivation and become more withdrawn. I believe that by giving my students the opportunity to learn more about themselves and be mentors for others will once again foster their confidence and efficacy.
My Project
The goal of this project is to help my students to build their self-efficacy that have been hurt from their isolation in the pandemic. I will start by mentoring the students in small groups. The students will learn topics such as identifying their emotions, recognizing their strengths, regulating their emotion, and developing a growth mindset
The books and games will be used to teach the students skills to build their character and how to cope with their emotions during this time.
They will learn that they are not alone; their feelings are shared by others. The activities we engage in will then give them hope and motivation to empower self-growth, be an agent for change, and help each other.
Since I teach two different grade levels, the older students will then become the mentors for the younger students. They will pay it forward by teaching their mentee the skills they have learned. Finally, each student (both mentor and mentee) will make a T-shirt with a massage that will promote their developed growth mindset. The created T-shirts will spread a powerful message and create a sense of community.
