Promoting Reading Across All Content Areas

My students need leveled Science and Social studies magazines to tie in Reading standards.

My Students

Standards, curriculum, and the rigor in which teachers teach are increasing. In order to have students use Reading across all content areas, Science and Social Studies content are being utilized to their full extent. These magazines will aide in my goal to incorporate Reading through these areas.

I teach at one of the highest population of students in poverty in my county.

However, I teach some of the most amazing students you would ever meet! They have eager minds and are willing to push themselves to meet their goals. They are full of life and know that if they can dream it....they can achieve it.

My Project

These magazines can be used in multiple ways in my classroom. I have asked for two different levels to enable high and low students to work together. They can be completed during center time, as a whole group, or I can use questions from them to play one of their favorite trivia games. They will allow students to see more than just what is located in their textbooks. It is also another type of resource that will allow them to learn about important text elements like captions, text boxes, headers, subtitles, and so on.

It is harder for my students to obtain background knowledge.

Their parents can't afford to take them to the beach, on a road trip, or to a museum. These magazines will allow me to bring them into a whole new world. One that develops this very important background knowledge that they will use for the rest of their lives.
