Promoting Independence In Pre-K!

My students need the listening center to read along with books and for music when they need to calm their bodies down independently. The timers will help children with transitions.

My Students

Our classroom in currently funded by the Pre-K Expansion grant and families that participate must fall under certain income eligibility requirements. We serve families of lower income and provide a high quality education experience. Each family receives family services through a local Head Start agency.

Every student has a different background that makes them unique.

In being partners with these families we work towards children growth both academically and socially. This year our students are very creative and are beginning to become a community of learners.

My Project

In our classroom we are continuously encouraging children to explore books. We have books in each area of the classroom to promote the use of texts whether it be to get ideas for play, make connections to activities or deepen knowledge. Children often get upset because they are unable to 'read' the books independently.

With a listening center children will be able to explore books without direct teacher support.

The listening center will also be used for student who may need time to calm their bodies down by listening to quiet music. The sand timers will support children in being independent when teachers gives a certain amount of time for an independent task or sensory break. Instead of the teacher telling them when to be done they can rely on using the sand timer to remind them. We want all children to be independent.
