This project aims to provide students with a fun and engaging way to work on their spelling and vocabulary skills during "MyClimb", our building MTSS reading intervention time. Spelling (which involves both phonemic awareness and an understanding of phonics) and vocabulary are key components in the five pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, oral fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension) and support students in their overall comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction texts. These are essential foundational skills students must have in order to become proficient readers.
Games have often been used in the classroom to teach and reinforce content, and we believe creating a large collection of word games for our students would be an effective way to increase foundational reading skills which would filter into comprehension of texts over time.
Dr. Tim Rasinki, a leading researcher in the field of reading fluency, cites word games as an excellent way to help students practice spelling and expand their Tier II vocabulary (words that are frequently seen in reading but often require explicit instruction for full comprehension). Word games provide an accessible way for all students to learn more about spelling and vocabulary in an exciting and competitive fashion.
