After the run, girls were provided snacks, water, and Gatorade, and activities that included bracelet making, tie-dyeing shirts, a photo booth, and learning about other ways to run for Summit Trail and Olathe Northwest High School. Every one of the girls successfully crossed the finish line in 25 minutes or less, and everyone left with a bracelet and tee shirt (or two!) to help them remember the event. \r\n\r\nBeing a part of an activity in school has been shown to positively impact grades, connections, and ownership in middle school students. This running event, open to 4-8th-grade girls, was a stepping stone to participating in cross country in middle school and beyond. While being involved matters, the physical and mental benefits of running are just as valuable to adolescent girls. Cross country can boost self-confidence and positive body image, and it provides a community of like-minded peers that support and cheer for one another both on and off the course.\r\n\r\nYour donations helped make a difference in the lives of many girls who participated in the Summit Trail Girls Fun Run. My cheerleaders have heard me talk about wanting concussion helmets for over a year now and I am so excited for them to be here. They were a bit embarrassed at first to put them on but within three tries of a new stunt, when one of them had a foot to the head and it hurt less than they thought, became believers in the helmets. They know that they have the ability to wear these as they continue to practice stunting because even regularly practiced stunts can fall. \r\n\r\nOur squad has been able to try some new stunts that intimidated them before having this extra safety measure- we have two preps on the sides with a prep group in the middle to throw to a flip and catch in an extension! I have also had two cheerleaders, who have flown when asked before but didn't like it, ask to try flying again because they feel safer with this barrier. In stunt groups, my cheerleaders' confidence to continue trying has been great- they are getting discouraged less when a stunt doesn't hit because they have the stamina to continue.","fullyFundedDate":1734405239619,"projectUrl":"project/stms-cheerleading-concussion-helmets/9008150/","projectTitle":"STMS Cheerleading Concussion Helmets","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Millard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9874848_orig.png?crop=522,522,x0,y46&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1734364001976","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9874848"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_122521","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":577,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":32,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":60,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":91.5,"schoolId":122521,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Summit Trail Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Summit Trail Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/kansas/olathe-public-schools-usd-233/summit-trail-middle-school/122521"}
