Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 29 wonderful 5th-grade students, which include special education students, magnet students, English Language Learners, and intervention students. They are very enthusiastic about learning and are always eager to explore new things. They love coming to school every day, and always have a big smile on their faces, despite the socioeconomic hardships they endure in the community in which they live. They attend a school in California, in a low-income neighborhood. The school is both a regular and highly gifted/magnet institution. However, my students are part of the regular school and do not have access to the materials and enrichment activities that the magnet students have.
“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler.
This quote has inspired me to teach empathy and tolerance in the classroom.
My Project
I have been teaching empathy to my students from the lessons provided in our Health textbook. They know what empathy means, but I don't think they really understand how to show it. That is why I decided to use the book "Wonder" which is a fictional story about a boy who has severe facial abnormalities and the journey he embarks when he is sent to middle school after being homeschooled. This book would be a perfect vehicle for the students to gain a deeper understanding of what it means, how it feels, and how to show empathy to others.
I strongly believe that in order for students to understand tolerance and empathy, they need to be aware of what others are feeling and see the world through their eyes.
Just telling students that they need to care for others' feelings is not enough. They need to experience how to listen to someone instead of just talking to them and get to know someone better before judging them. If students learn these skills and put them to practice, they will get along better with each other and make our world a better place.
Thank you in advance for your financial support to ensure my students can become the best they can be.
