Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Caring. Brave. Inquisitive. Smart. These are words one can use to describe my fifth grade class. They are a group of students from vastly different backgrounds and experiences from a diverse city in California.
My students are amazing individuals that come together to form an equally amazing classroom community.
They continue to learn and grow during this very different school year.
My Project
Each Wednesday, I dedicate our afternoon Zoom and class time to teach art and celebrate diversity. This time helps my classroom come alive and strengthens the social-emotional well-being of my students. Students talk, compliment one another's pieces and have fun while learning.
Art celebrates different perspectives and celebrates the uniqueness of artists and their subjects; having supplies that honor and celebrate the many diverse cultures of my students will enhance our art lessons.
Recently, while drawing flower sellers in the style of Diego Rivera, students mixed colors to get the "right" shade for skin tone. It was at this point I knew I needed to help fill this void with a project.
One of the first projects will be self portraits. Construction paper, markers, paint, colored pencils and pastels in mahogany, tan, ivory, and toffee shades give students the opportunity to represent themselves in the many beautiful colors that make each one of us unique. The watercolor paper will help add different textures and will allow them to mix mediums. The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow me to find lessons that will help me include art and diversity discussions in other areas of our curriculum.
