Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a middle school Creative Writing/Language Arts teacher at TCMS which serves predominantly Hispanic, low income, first-generation immigrants and was established in 2003 in the Coachella Valley. The kids I serve enjoy learning about the greater world around them. We do this through books and sharing experiences as we read together. They are excited to share what they know, and what they want to learn more about!
My Project
Our school's Hiking Club's mission is to promote an appreciation of the great outdoors and a passion for taking to the trail and hiking through some of SoCal’s most scenic desert spaces through off-campus hiking excursions while promoting environmental awareness at school.
Members love this club because of the opportunities it provides to create bonds and become more involved with students and faculty off campus, while learning new skills and experiencing the beauty of the natural world together.
On campus the club runs a Recycling program and the Clean Campus Campaign. Club members learn the essentials hiking, trail etiquette, and how to travel safely in wilderness areas. The club’s officers appreciate the hiking club because it builds leadership skills and allows for opportunities to take on more challenges and responsibilities.
The club give students an opportunity to be active, explore nature, and make friends along the way. There is no registration fee or application process to join the club; simply sign a waiver form and you are a member of the club. The club is dedicated to raising climate change awareness and plans group hikes, and clean-up and sustainability projects on a quarterly basis.
The TCMSHC encourages members to challenge themselves with new outdoor experiences —such as attempting more strenuous hikes, learning basic survival skills, and gradually building confidence in their abilities to thrive in great outdoors —and seeks sponsorship by the Sierra Club, or similar affiliate, who will provide bus transportation, and trained Sierra Club Leaders who are vetted, CPR & First Aid certified.
The club would like to acquire hiking hats (to ward off the desert sun), hydration packs, T-shirts (for those who officially join the hiking club), and various swag items to reward students as they reach a certain amount of hikes and/or participate in
