Our classroom is a former vice Principal's office & it has 1 white board. There simply is not enough time or space to quickly make manifest what different classes need for warm-up, translations, cultural content, assessment and enrichment. Classes need various approaches which equipment enables.
My students are a culturally diverse group with different levels of educational preparation.
They encompass a broad socio-economic spectrum.
Most have chosen Latin for ambitious reasons, particularly to understand English vocabulary better and the cultural import of a civilization that encompassed much of the Mediterranean, Africa and Europe; and endured through various transformations for 2000+ years. They have no problem seeing Latin as a multicultural phenomenon.
My students especially love learning through Latin about ancient gods, heroes and mythological creatures. They love learning about words derived from Latin (both English and Spanish). They love learning philosophical ideas. They also love learning about the daily life of ancient and medieval peoples.
My Project
A projector and document camera will enable me to more nimbly and effectively move different back-to-back classes through a greater range of learning activities. With these I can more easily move from warm-up exercises, to a presentation of cultural information, to a grammar lesson and exercise and to translation.
(There is really nothing more deadly than having a classroom starring at their individual books while they try to follow instruction or translation. It is much more effective to have the whole class looking up at a projected image of a text and the teacher while we work it out together.)
My students will also be able to have access in class to the online resources that go with our book, but which only teachers have direct access to.
Students will benefit from more efficient transitions to different learning activities in class and from a wider, richer array of learning materials.
Students will be able to experience more often working as a whole class, collaboratively. They will also be able to use the equipment to present their own projects and to learn by teaching with better tools. The equipment will enable the teacher to make learning more fun and lively.
