Projector Helps Build Excitement and Confidence in ELA
My students need a projector to help make our classroom a 21st century community of learners. We will our share work and create a collaborative reading/writing workshop.
Most of my students would not identify themselves as readers or writers, and many believe that good readers and writers were born that way. I want to show them that they can improve by making the class a more collaborative environment so that they will feel supported by their peers as well as by me.
I teach English in a large, rural school district.
I have 10th and 12th grade students. My 10th grade classes are inclusion classes. Many of my students are English language learners, have learning disabilities, or face other significant challenges. Very few students read or write outside of school and most say that they have not actually read an entire book for years. Some read at levels several grades below their current grade. Too many of my students from both grade levels have struggled to be successful in English in the past. They simply don't believe that they can be.
By working with partners and in small groups, we will build a supportive learning community which will encourage them to challenge themselves to read more complex text and build confidence in their writing skills. This technology will help to create a more engaging learning experience where we can readily share our work and easily access other electronic resources that will aid in the instruction.
My Project
I have already purchased a tablet and a special stand. Using this equipment, along with a special app and the PC in the room, I now have an improvised document camera, and much more! With the projector, I can use this equipment to model literacy strategies while the students have an unobstructed view of my real-time processes as a reader & writer. The projector will allow students to share the work they have done on paper. It will also allow us to project group work when students work together using laptop computers, which we will sometimes have access to. We will be able to view videos of actors performing scenes from plays and then students can record and project videos of themselves acting out parts. Students will view, analyze, and respond to the wide variety media that this equipment will provide us access to. The possibilities are endless!
This technology will support a dynamic learning environment where we all work together to create texts and other products that build students' confidence as well as competence.
Students will be inspired to write and share reflections, observations, and rebuttals after viewing objects, images, and speeches. They will begin to see ways their voices can and should be heard.
