Projection Time!

Help me give my students another avenue for quickly sharing information with the class by using an overhead projector. It is nice because it is stand alone and does not need to interface other peripherals.

My Students

I teach 4 sections of Biology and 1 section of Physics. Students are often reluctant to speak in front of classmates because they are fearful of being incorrect. However, there is something about giving them a chance to come up and write on a projector transparency than can get some of the shyer students to give it a shot. Our school is in Pacifica, CA and serves about 1000 students days from middle to lower socioeconomic backgrounds and a diverse cultural spectrum.

Students spend a lot of time on their phones these days so I think it is beneficial to move away from delivering content via online screens to more interactive drawing/conversations.

Students often think it is cool that I like to use a projector but when I describe how its more efficient (just need an overhead projector...not a doc cam +a computer + network +ceiling projector) they see its benefits. In addition, if you have media from the ceiling projector, one can overlay an overhead projection on it to make notes etc. on the ceiling projection. (a bit like a simpler version of a smartboard).

My Project

Although some folks think of overhead projectors as 'old-school' they actually remain useful in this fast-paced tech world. It is nice to have a stand-alone projector that students can use to share work with the class that does not involve hooking a document cam up to computer then networking to a ceiling projector.

It is useful to have students get the experience of working through problems at the projector for classmates instead of just writing on a board with their backs turned to the class.

Also, when it comes to sketching diagrams and pictures to explain concepts, it is much easier to use an overhead projector than to freehand a drawing, take a pic, upload it, then project it over the network.
