Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am asking for a LCD/video/multi-media projector - new or used, fancy or simple - that I can hook up to my computer to show videos, Power Point presentations, and other media to my 8th Grade English class. I am currently taking an educational technology class as part of my graduate work and have realized how useful a projector would be in the classroom. The internet is a great resource and I now know about so many great educational websites I want to use with my students. United Streaming is one of the resources that I am most excited about; it has an extensive library of video clips - in all lengths - related to practically every educational subject there is. Being able to download these clips to my computer and showing them to my students is a great way to keep their attention, bring some life to my lessons, and appeal to a wider variety of learners. I just read an article about why boys are sometimes more reluctant readers than girls and how this has to do with the fact that boys are very visual learners and often aren't attracted to books without images. Although this article is subjective, I have seen this behavior in my own classroom, and I immediately thought about how I could alter my "book talks" (briefly speaking about a book to the class in hopes of parking interest) with graphics - maybe even using a Power Point presentation. Most teachers at my school struggle with classroom management and I firmly believe using more forms of media in the classroom would help students focus and subsequently learn more. My school does have one projector but it would be difficult for me to use it regularly as it must be reserved in advance and shared equally. I want to be able to plan lessons that are contingent upon having a computer projector and not worry that someone doesn't have the right key or has already signed up for the day same day as my lesson. My students really are great people and I feel that using this technology in the classroom would expand their world in so many ways and really encourage learning. Most of them are familiar with the internet but do not use it to its full capacity. My teacher's website, www.schoollink.org/twin, has an extensive listing of informational websites that are great for kids and lots of other information about how important it is to bring technology into our classrooms. I have listed one of the most inexpensive new projectors I could find, but I would happily accept a used or refurbished one. If you work for a company that is upgrading its technology maybe they could donate an older projector to my classroom. I really believe that this projecter and the subsequent information my students will gain access to is an invaluable tool for classroom management, teaching, and learning. Your help would be greatly appreciated by my students and me!
