Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how hard it was to view posters, or see the teacher's demonstration during art class? Well you can help to make sure that the students at Hillcrest will not have to feel that frustration, and help them to be more creative in art class.
My students consist of 85% low income, 53% English Language Learners, and there is a mobility rate of 22%.
Their only exposure to the Arts is through their once a week, 40 minutes of Art & Music classes. The students love learning about world cultures through the arts and creating artwork based on their new knowledge of that culture. The ELL students need to be able to see the examples and demonstrations, as they might not understand the language, but they can see the steps when projected in the classroom. As I present the lessons with the projector, students will be able to see the details of the work and discuss the art work using art vocabulary. Using art vocabulary will expand their vocabulary. Much of the art vocabulary overlaps with Common Core vocabulary. There are many benefits to having a projector in the Art room.
My Project
Next year I will be on a cart for art classes. By having my own projector for Art class, it will save valuable instructional minutes in 1st through 6th grade. I won't have checkout a projector and keep setting up my laptop to the school projector. By having an Art projector I can have it set up on the art AV cart ready to go, just wheel it into a classroom. The students will be able to view artwork from a variety of artists and world cultures clearly. The classes will be able to hold discussions about art and see teacher demonstrations more clearly.
As stated above, the projector will help English Language Learners to see the steps of the project.
They will start to connect visual images to words and their English vocabulary will improve. It will help to introduce world cultures and artists to the low income students. It will help with integrating the arts into general education curriculum, and help to create a STEAM approach in the class room. This project will actually help all of my students, 1-6th grade.
