This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Greetings! I serve 9th grade SLIFE students in inner-city Trenton, New Jersey. My students have recently immigrated as unaccompanied minors from Central America. As they transition to a new country and school, it is vitally important that I create an environment where my students feel at home - safe, and genuinely cared for, and where their basic needs are met so they can focus on learning.
For many of my students, the primary source of food is what is provided at school.
Also, because transportation to school can pose challenges (many have long walks, or have long waits for public buses), they often arrive at school having missed the breakfast period. I want to provide a substantive snack in these cases so that they can focus and make it to lunchtime.
Lastly, none of my students have laundry machines in their homes and have shared that the cost of using a laundromat impacts the frequency with which they are able to wash their clothes. I want to distribute laundry supplies to help ease the strain on their families. Every little bit makes a difference.
