Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you know most students with disabilities are sitting home after high school because they don't have the skills to obtain and sustain competitive employment? Not my students!

My students in Georgia apply to Project SEARCH after 4 years of High School.

If accepted, they agree to have us hold their Special Education Diplomas for one year while they complete a 5th year of High School with on-the job training as Interns, receive travel training, and participate in classroom instruction for money management, banking, employability skills, driver's education, etc. We have a 50%+ success rate with gaining employment and sustaining employment 4 weeks after the one-year program has come to an end (with tentative hires forthcoming in the community). 4 were hired at the hospital where my classroom is located. The "Interns" are also able to complete High School requirements to obtain Regular Ed. Diplomas, if it applies. 28% of the Interns this year did just that and are going on to College or Technical School! 5 out of 7 first year students obtained their driver's license. We plan to serve 10 students with disabilities for the upcoming year but are short in supplies

My Project

I have requested classroom supplies such as printer ink, paper, dry erase markers, a white-board for planning our schedules each day, and supplies for completing projects such as portfolios, resumes, community speaking engagements, etc. They need scrubs for training in these real-world training sites. Our students with disabilities will build quality resumes and build portfolios with these supplies. They will represent our program well by giving quality presentations to various organizations, potential job-training sites, and potential employers. By donating to my project, you will help create a quality workforce in our community in Georgia and give students with disabilities the confidence (and materials) they need to go out there and contribute to their community and live their dreams!

Our students with disabilities will have at least 3 opportunities to interview in the hospital that provides the classroom and job training sites.

They will receive job coaching on 3 different rotations on the hospital main campus and off-campus locations, chosen based on their strengths, abilities, and interests. They will be gainfully employed and be able to live their dreams of living independently. With a successful 3rd year, we will have helped 23 of our special students realize their dreams.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
