Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I school in a small community with an amazing group of eighteen kindergarten students and their families. I say families as well because I truly believe in educating the families as well as the students.
"Children should leave each day with a smile on their face and a story in their heart!" Author unknown.
The school I work in has had a lot of turnover with staff during the last couple of years, and some of that has to do with the dynamics of the area but also within our community. Working with these families truly makes you go the extra mile to help the families and students have a better life when they walk through your classroom door.
Many of my students are English Language Learners, from single family homes, no pre-school background, and their families struggle to make ends meet. Incorporating activities and engaging learning opportunities in my classroom that follow students home is one of my goals when families have me, as their teacher.
My Project
Parents want their children to be healthy, successful and happy. Sometimes life happens and even though parents’ hearts are in the right place they financially can not provide the important things children need in order to reach a good place in their daily life. Project SAFE stands for Schools And Families for Education. We all want what is best for each and every child.
Unfortunately, not all students in a poverty school come fed, bathed, dressed appropriately, or have had a great night’s sleep because of their living conditions.
For them, having a safe classroom environment and positive educator to see at school every morning helps them be ready to learn and return day after day eager to learn more. This is so important for my homeless students.
Knowing that if they are hungry I would have the means to help them with a snack such as crackers, juice box, pretzels, or fruit snacks would be such a blessing.
Many of my students who have been experiencing homelessness have not had some of the basic essentials such as socks, warm hats or even clean clothing.
Some of my homeless students come to school with their clothing unwashed for days at a time so having the opportunity to have laundry soap on hand to wash their coat or sweater in our Life Skills room would mean a lot to that child. Having soap to wash their hands that is safe for their little bodies as well as disinfectant wipes to assist in keeping the classroom environment safe and germ-free for healthy bodies.
