Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My 2nd-4th grade students are kind, unique, and full of energy to learn. They are a part of a special education classroom for students with communication disabilities such as autism. Our school is a part of the Ward 8 community in Washington, D.C., a low-income area. All of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Our school is on the district's list of the 40 schools with the highest needs.

Despite challenges at home and in the community, my students work hard to improve their academic skills and social skills through targeted interventions.

These interventions target the whole student, not just their academics. Communication and social skills are a huge part of our day because autism affects my students' ability to communicate. My students communicate through pictures, sign language, and assistive technology. These methods of communication also help my students achieve academically, as they read, write, and do math. At my school, we live by the motto, "Be the best!" and I believe my students are the best.

My Project

This year my students have the opportunity to participate in the Special Olympics for the first time! They will play basketball, speed skating, and track and field. Special Olympics consists of weekly trainings, qualifying competitions, and seasonal championship games. Our school motto is "Be the best!" and we can't wait to show the world how we can be the best at sports.

In order to participate weekly in basketball and track and field, my students need to wear athletic attire to allow them to move comfortably and play the sports.

This is where you come in. My students need sets of athletic clothes with shorts and t-shirts to keep at school so they are always able to participate on training and game days. Many of my students can not afford athletic clothing, and I want all of my students to have equitable access to this amazing opportunity. If students are not in athletic attire on game day, they will have to miss training, causing them to fall behind.

We will keep these clothes at school so we will always be prepared for training. Our athletic attire will be washed at school – providing all students the opportunity to practice a crucial life skill, washing clothes.

We are so excited to represent our school, practice teamwork, meet new friends, and become better athletes!
