At the beginning of the school year, many of my students have a very limited understanding of sewing construction. Because design and construction are integral components of their work for their Advanced Placement portfolios, we always spend the beginning of the year in the construction phase so students can recognize the impacts of straight/consistent seaming and the impacts of accurate measurement. In addition, students will create 2 projects that emphasize stitching a zipper between 2 pieces of fabric: a basic cosmetic bag and a zippered pouch. As a teacher in a school considered low-income/high poverty, my students face challenges in and out of the classroom. With a limited budget, I do not want the challenge of poverty or district funding to deter my students from the opportunity to experience the basics of sewing construction.
I am reaching out to DonorsChoose.org to seek funding for miscellaneous supplies to help my students learn the sewing construction process.
We sew a variety of projects at the beginning of the year including a pillow cover, pillowcase, and 2 cosmetic bags (2 different styles with both including zippers!) Working with some smaller projects, especially zippers, really helps students understand the construction process.
My Project
These basic items will help my students build their skills in understanding how fashionable items are created. In making a pillow cover, the students work on their ability to sew straight lines. Creating 2 different cosmetic bags give my students the opportunity to work with zippers in 2 ways. Of course we need thread and fabric that comes form another source then my scrap bin so they can wee what a yard of fabric looks like.
Thread, fabric, zippers, and pillow forms are needed for my students to begin stitching.
Without these basic supplies, my students will not have the base knowledge needed of the construction process. These projects are tiny steps in the process to learning project construction.
My students learn so much with these beginning projects and their growth is tremendous!
