Project Coffee Shop is designed to provide middle and high school special education students with the opportunity to learn how a business/job works, gain social skills, and learn math fundamentals.
Students will actively participate in making and delivering coffee, as well as collecting money. The skills students will gain from this experience will provide them with knowledge and allow them the ability to be desirable candidates for a job after graduation. There will be about 5 students who will participate in “Project Coffee Shop” during their math class.
The overall goal of this project is to provide students with a real life experience and help them gain skills and knowledge that will help them post graduation. Students will learn how to operate a coffee machine, read and follow directions while making the coffee, understand the importance of teamwork and punctuality, as well as gain social skills, and work on math fundamentals. Once these students graduate high school, they will be seeking employment. In their future jobs they will be expected to follow directions, work with others, and possibly handle money. This class will give them the opportunity to practice these skills. Students will receive compensation for their work (point system). The importance of attendance will be stressed as well. Students will see how someone's absence affects their workload and students will see how being absent affects their compensations (not earning points). Students will also be active in keeping and restocking inventory. When items need to be restocked students will go to the store and purchase those items (assisted by a staff member). This opportunity allows students the opportunity to learn budgeting, shopping for the best deal, and how to purchase (money management) items.
