It is important for students to be able to freely move around the classroom & have multiple learning spaces in a clean, healthy environment. My students are the hardest working students I've ever had the privilege of working with. They deserve a new carpet to collaborate on.
My school is one of the 15 lowest performing schools in a city that is struggling.
The school services a community where 47% of adults are functionally illiterate and around 42% of households in our area live in poverty. My students, despite their struggles, come to school everyday ready to learn and participate. They are an inspiration to me. Many of these students come from homes of parents who cannot read. They come to school eager and excited to learn everyday. Though they may have a challenging life at home, they don't let that phase them. They are some of the hardest working, most dedicated students I've ever had. They are fully committed to their learning. It is a privilege to work with these kids. They drive me to do better and to be the best educator possible.
In my class, I have a very old carpet. It is ripped, frayed, and stained. I have a class size of 31 right now and all of my students do not fit on the carpet together. I envision them having a clean, large carpet to sit on during lessons. We also sit on the carpet for class meetings, yoga, and circle time. Needless to say, it's a place where we spend a lot of quality time together. We deserve a clean, large space where we can all fit and learn together. The carpet I have now, I found in the basement of the school in the beginning of the year. It was very dirty but I couldn't afford a brand new carpet as a first year teacher. So I steam cleaned it, trimmed some frays, and made it work. Well, it is on it's last limb. And we need some help!
By donating to my class' project, you'll be supplying many years of students with a clean, open, large learning space where they can bond, collaborate, and grow.
A large carpeted area in a first grade class is crucial; it's where we spend most of our time.
