Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kind, intelligent and eager to learn as soon as they enter our building! They are thinkers, learners, questioners, and creators. They always want to take their learning to the next level. They are the future and there is nothing I want more than for my students to feel prepared for their future endeavors.
However, my amazing students reside in a neighborhood that would be considered of extremely low socioeconomic status.
Their parents often work multiple jobs in order to afford the necessities. One hundred percent of the population at my school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students are English Language Learners and have to work that much more diligently to learn the English language and meet the Common Core Standards.
My students do not let this neighborhood or any situation discourage them, instead, they feel empowered. At the beginning of the year, I instill the importance of education in each and every one of my students. Throughout the year, I am able to see their passion for learning reach new heights!
My Project
This year my class is embarking on a new challenge! The name of the challenge is "Classroom Book a Day." We have challenged ourselves to do just that; read a classroom book a day. This is a popular challenge in education and can be found by Googling "#classroombookaday".
I've found in the last couple of years of teaching that students don't enjoy reading by the time they get to fourth grade, in fact, most students loath it.
This is hard to believe as an educator because I know that books give us a place to go, when we have to stay where we are. I want my students to find their passion for reading and I think I can do that with your help. I've requested some new and popular picture books to be read aloud with my students every day. While my classroom library is definitely full, most titles students have already read. Since the purpose of this challenge is to engage students and allow children to find their love of books, some new titles are necessary.
By donating to this project, you are impacting 31 students today and for eternity!
