Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are shrewd, savvy, brave, resilient and wise beyond their years. They attend a Title I school and live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. This is also the lowest academically performing school district in New York. Despite these challenges, they are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.
When my students enter the classroom and see an experiment set up, they are excited and curious and want to start exploring right away.
Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. My students truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.
My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.
My Project
This project-based broadcast journalism proposal is a collaborative effort amongst 3 faculty members. We would like to provide our students with the tools and opportunity to take an active role in learning about science and social issues in the current world arena.
Students will gather data, conduct interviews, make observations, and return to the classroom to broadcast their findings and opinion pieces to their peers.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 with slim protective case will give my students the flexibility and mobility to conduct out of class interviews with members of their class, teachers, family members, and notable experts. They will bring those first-person accounts back to our classroom and incorporate them into their broadcasts. They will use the Canon IVY Mobile Mini Photo Printer, Ink, and Paper to capture candid shots of their interview subjects and observations.
Professional journalists are known for drinking great quantities of coffee, and our high school students are no strangers to energy drinks like Red Bull. I would like them to explore alternatives to those super caffeinated drinks by offering them a sample of loose leaf Puer and chocolate mint teas, as well as some cold press coffee blends.
