Programming in STEM with a Focus on Computational Modeling

My students need Chromebooks to learn programming fundamentals in the 9th grade that will lay the foundation for the programming sequence we have developed.

My Students

The students of my classroom are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. We are one of the most diverse schools in the city, ethnically and economically. Many of my students receive free lunch and free fare to school. Our school is a selective, public, college-preparatory school with a focus on science, math, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering. We have a seven year Engineering sequence developed in-house with mentors from the Columbia University School of Engineering. that is unique to the city. We reflect and redesign each year to improve our home-grown curriculum focusing on how each course can support the progression to the next. One of those focus areas is on computer programming.

Our school, however, often doesn’t have the budget to meet the needs of the technology we would like to implement in the classroom.

Despite this, our kids are enthusiastic, have very high attendance and most graduate high school with college credit and are deemed ‘college ready.’

My Project

Students will get 4 years of applied programming beginning with Scratch and JavaScript in the 9th grade, using ‘Pyret’ to perform Computational Modeling in 10th grade Physics, using 'RobotC' in our ‘Robotics Course; using Python to model systems in ‘Principles of Engineering’ and Arduinos to program various sensors in their ‘Capstone Engineering’ course.

As both a Physics and Engineering teacher, I work closely to integrate our courses across subjects and am eager to be involving the math teachers this year in the Computational Physics program.

In order to do successful, I am requesting eight Chromebooks to use across the courses this year. We are often limited in our implementation because of scarce computers. Having these dedicated computers will make this possible!
