This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 7th graders represent a wide range of cultural backgrounds that mirror the communities they reside. My school is a Title I school with at least 30 percent of the population bilingual and the majority of the students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Although my students make up the generation that has more exposure to technology than their parents or previous generations, there exposure to programming is limited.
It is my hope that through this opportunity more of my students will be motivated to take computer, science and math related courses as well as learn more about STEM careers.
With more opportunities to learn to code, I know that my students will be better able to find internships, jobs, and scholarships to get them to college and prepare them for 21st Century opportunities.
My Project
Our school is experiencing a 20% increase in student enrollment. We are up from 900 in the 2017 - 2018 academic year to 1100 this academic year. As a result, we have more students than we have laptops. A normal class size is 20 students. But because of the increased enrollment, I have a class size of 25 students.
All 25 of our students want to learn to code.
Our department only has laptops to support 20 students. Currently, students are sharing a computer to learn to code and take tests. If funded, the two Chromebooks ensure that more students will get the full learning experience.
