When I was six years old, I knew what I knew, while things I couldn't explain must have involved "magic" or some other mysterious force. My students are not as easily satisfied with simple answers. Their natural curiosity fuels their desire to understand why and how things work.
My first grade students come from many places and backgrounds.
With such a diverse population, the students place an emphasis on learning about and respecting each others cultures. The children also value academic achievement. They deserve programs and materials that will assist them in becoming successful, lifelong learners. Unfortunately, reduced state funding and our current economy severely impact the children's learning.
My Project
The students get visits from Professor Oxygen, "a science teacher from a local college". (It's really me with a lab coat and goggles!) He has done experiments with the kids demonstrating that air takes up space, vibrating strings make sound, and combining a solid (baking soda) and a liquid (vinegar) produces a gas. With more science supplies, I want to continue to foster the student's drive to learn about the world around them. By providing them with opportunities to conduct their own experiments, the children will gain both the inductive and deductive reasoning skills needed to be critical thinkers.
Reading about science might be the fastest way to deliver its content, but doing science projects and experiments is the better way to learn it.
By helping Professor Oxygen provide though-provoking science activities for the kids, you will be preparing these children to be the problem-solvers of tomorrow!
