Mrs. Dianna Carter from New Haven CT is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Professional, Flexible Seating for High School Leaders.

Help me give my students professional, flexible seating. These office chairs will elevate the level of professionalism in our outdated school facility, increase student engagement, as well as give students the flexibility to work with diverse partners.

My Students

I work at a small magnet school in the heart of urban New Haven with a diverse population. Students describe themselves as positive forces for societal change. "I am always looking to be a better person", "I know myself and won't let others negatively influence me."

Action for positive change; that's what fuels my students.

Our school's theme is leadership, public policy, and social justice and these students aim to be the fulcrum for societal progress. Even though many of my students experience trauma and struggles outside of the classroom, they remain positive and compassionate within the classroom.

Chronic absenteeism and difficulty trusting and thus collaborating are challenges we see with our diverse urban population. One of my many goals for my students is to be able to see themselves as worthwhile people with innovative ideas, who need to be heard and are able to listen to people with differing perspectives.

These office chairs will make the students feel important and allow them to move freely from a collaborative group to collaborative group.

My Project

The use of discussion protocols and collaborating discourse is an almost daily activity for my 10th grade English students. In our 21st century, tech overwhelmed society speaking and listening skills are becoming more and more important for college and career readiness. My students walk through the doors of an extremely outdated and, sometimes, depressing facility, but when they enter my classroom they are professionals whose voices are heard.

By donating to this project, you will be allowing students who often feel voiceless; respect, attention, and empathy.

These chairs will increase student engagement by allowing those addicted to phones physical mobility, so they aren't distracted by their tech. The chairs will engage reluctant learners because the room will become more professional. They will allow my students to listen to one another, work with diverse partners, and grow and build upon each other's ideas around social justice issues. All of this will increase student engagement because these students must collaborate and speak to one another. The chairs facilitate this through communication to students that their participation and professionalism is expected.

I have found that office chairs make students more engaged because they feel special and important. The wheels also allow them to freely move around the room so that they can collaborate with different partners.
