Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Biology teacher at an urban public school in Springfield, Massachusetts. Most of my students come from low income households and have had to overcome many hurdles in their lives. Even still, my students come to school ready to learn. It is my goal in my classroom to build my students up in both their science education and as strong, informed citizens of the world. I want every student that comes through my door to feel empowered with the knowledge of how the world around them works and confident that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to.
My Project
In my school district, we are moving to new standards that are based on stories and real world applications of science. This professional development class will help me expand my own knowledge to be better able to make valuable lessons for my students. Too often I hear that they don't see how they will use this information outside of school. I want to change that! I want to work to create lessons that captivate my students interest and get them excited about science. I also want to help connect and engage them to how science is used in the real world.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
