Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 1st grade in a high poverty public school in Indiana. I have a high population of English language learners.
Most of my students live in poverty stricken homes with one parent. My students need help gaining strategies and experiences to help them solve real world problems and to become successful problem solvers. These children need an incentive to improve their math problem solving scores.
My students need various math picture books that will be used during whole group math time to supplement our current math curriculum. For example, one of the lessons in one of the books teaches students math as the characters in the book set up a small business of a lemonade stand. The book teaches students how to graph their profits and losses through the purchasing of supplies and the profits of their sales. This project will serve the entire 1st grade as we always share books among classrooms. This grant will provide additional practice and guidance needed when students are learning and experiencing written language and math concepts. The books will widen their knowledge of math use through out everyday life.
With your help my students will gain exposure to real life problem solving and will experience success in math. These books will make math super-accessible to students and will show them how we use math in our everyday lives!
