Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In my first year of teaching at a small alternative high school in the South Bronx, I was shocked when I realized how undereducated my students were and how fearful they were to study mathematics. I was successful in changing the attitudes and self-esteem of many students through engaging them in fun yet conceptually deep activities. This year the theme of my interdisciplinary math/science class is heuristics -- how can we use what we know to reveal an unknown or solve a problem? My best lessons involved creative problem solving because the strategies used to solve problems through building on previously learned knowledge engage students. This is the type of learning recognized to be among the most effective methodologies. Two resources I am requesting are a student textbook of problems and strategies and a teacher resource guide to accompany the text. These books will be used in all my math classes, in my math club in the after school program, and potentially by all the other math teachers in my school. The algeblocks kit will provide an opportunity for all of my students to use manipulatives in solving problems and learning new concepts. Last year I used the few manipulatives I had to great effect in assisting my weakest students, but even the students in my advanced algebra after school class enjoyed and benefited from using them. The books are published by Key Curriculum Press and reflect standards established by NCTM. Your generous support will be directly utilized in my school curriculum and will engage and educate many students who enter my classroom scared of mathematics and transform them into critical thinking problem solvers!
