The snacks have made a huge difference in our classroom. Many of my students arrive at school after long commutes, sometimes without having had breakfast, and the snacks have helped them stay focused and energized throughout the day. One specific moment that stands out was during a group writing project where students were sharing personal narratives. Having snacks available created a warm, welcoming atmosphere. They could focus on their stories without the distraction of hunger. They felt supported as their needs were met! \r\nWhen they first saw the snacks, the students seriously lit up with excitement! I think they know we believe in serving them in ways that matter most. A few of them asked \"how\" and \"why? Many smiled and quietly helped themselves throughout the semester. Right now, we're working on a big history unit where students are writing about the history of Haiti and the Bronx. This unit includes talking about dentities, languages, and cultures. Having snacks during our writing has helped sustain their focus and motivation. It was incredible to see students take pride in connecting history to vibrant works of art that reflected both personal and collective stories.\r\n\r\nThe materials also supported other parts of our classroom community — like creating props and effects (including using the fog juice in our fog machine!) for our class play. Cleaning supplies you helped fund made it possible for students to take responsibility for our shared space after big art days, building both independence and community care.\r\n\r\nFinally, the book The Color of Law became a cornerstone text for our unit on housing policy in the Bronx, giving students critical insights into how government actions shaped—and continue to shape—their neighborhoods.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new supplies, their faces lit up. It is pure joy to participate in these reading circles with 17 and 18 year old students.\r\n\r\nThe added bonus to reading \"Starry Messenger\" is that the students know of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. We used our donation primarily to buy snacks for our students who come from homes where food insecurity is a major issue. On a regular basis I have students who are asking for food because the school lunch is inedible or that have not had enough to eat at home. When students are distracted by hunger it impacts their ability to stay awake in class and focus. Having the snacks has been a huge help in keeping students up and engaged in class activities, especially late in the day. \r\n\r\nIn my time at Fannie Lou, we have always viewed food as a major tool in building community. We hold a Thanksgiving potluck and various other group celebrations featuring food throughout the year. Generally, as teachers we pay for most of the food for these celebrations out of pocket. To have this abundance of snacks has really been a blessing. We will continue to use our fidget tools and social emotional learning resources throughout the spring semester to help students learn to manage their emotions in productive and healthy ways. Having snacks on hand puts everyone in the right frame of mind to do this essential work.
