Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a 7th-grade math teacher in a school striving for MYP authorization, I see hands-on math manipulatives as essential tools to help students grasp complex topics like probability. Access to manipulatives such as spinners, dice, and magnetic graph paper allows students to see probability in action, moving beyond abstract concepts to real-world applications. When students physically interact with these tools, they gain a deeper understanding of outcomes, randomness, and statistical reasoning. This hands-on approach not only makes probability more accessible but also aligns with MYP's emphasis on inquiry-based learning, where students explore and experiment to build their mathematical understanding.

In addition to manipulatives, our classroom needs general supplies like whiteboards, pencils, and whiteboard markers to support collaborative and interactive learning.

These resources enable students to practice problems, brainstorm ideas, and engage in quick assessments without the constraints of limited resources. Having individual whiteboards, for instance, allows students to work through probability scenarios independently or with partners, sharing their thought processes and learning from each other. With the flexibility these supplies provide, we can create a learning environment that promotes continuous participation and reinforces mathematical skills through consistent practice, and can lower math anxiety.

Finally, incorporating games and small prizes as part of our math activities adds an engaging and motivational element to our lessons. Games centered around probability concepts, for example, not only make learning fun but also reinforce key ideas like chance, prediction, and outcome analysis. When students work toward small rewards, they become more invested in their learning, which can be especially meaningful in a low-income area where access to enrichment activities may be limited. Prizes and games help to build a classroom culture where students feel excited to learn, fostering a positive attitude toward math that can boost confidence and encourage persistence and improve students mental health.
