My Students

Middle school years are an intriguing time. Students begin to cognitively develop in many areas. However, many are still very concrete and it is not only difficult but impossible in some cases for them to understand something which they can not physically see.

I teach middle school math and science.

I am the only teacher for these two core subjects for grades six, seven, and eight in our school district. That gives me six different classes per day (three of which are lab classes), a study hall that I tutor students in, along with noon recess duty. I also am the only track and cross country coach for our school. I have no adult aides and a "40 minute" prep. We average about 20 students per grade level district-wide, totaling about 315 students. My middle school math and science students come from a community of "working poor". They need highly motivational materials to match their "out of this world" attitudes. Together, with these requested supplies, we can make a difference.

My Project

Any materials, like prisms, that can be supplied, will allow me to focus on the important task of teaching rather than the business end of trying to find materials. Please help me excel with my students again. The glass prism set and the water prism, if received, would be used in this upcoming year's curriculum and beyond. I expect that having concrete, hands-on materials will allow me to reach higher success levels with instruction, thereby motivating students to continue pursuing science.

How can I tell you how much it means to a child to have supplies?

I recently finished a book about Greg Mortenson's life. If he can accomplish all he has done, imagine what a few of us together can do. It inspired me to keep fighting for these kids...the forgotten middle level. Help me not only teach them now but also inspire them to keep reaching for more math and science for their future.
