Printmaking Using Gel Printing Plates for Elementary Students!

My students need gel printing plates to experience new ways of printmaking in the art classroom! Students will create mono- prints which teaches them about texture, color and printing all in one art making unit.

This project expired on July 18, 2017.

My Students

The children at our school are as diverse as New York City is diverse. We have children from India, Guyana, Mexico and Trinidad, just to name a few. Approximately 11% of our students are English language learners. We also are a barrier-free school, which gives us the privilege to have students with varying physical abilities. There are many inclusion and ICT classes (integrated co-teaching) which meet the needs of all special education and general education students.

At our school we celebrate our diversity and use it as a tool to educate.

We are a Title I school where approximately 80% of our students receive free lunch. All the different cultures, parents, administration, teachers, and support staff use all of our differences within the schools' population to enhance the academics, arts, sports and social development every day. We do this through our curriculum, family fun day, art show, inter-school sports competitions, field trips, a school-wide barbecue, and many other activities throughout the year involving the community and the school staff. It is a wonderful learning environment.

My Project

All students should have an opportunity to experience as many different art making opportunities as possible during their elementary years in school. I have been teaching art for over 15 years and realize the printmaking in my classroom could be enhanced. We have done some foam printing but have never done mono-prints. A mono-print is a onetime print where students create a design on a surface and then applies paper onto the surface and rubs their paper to get a print of the work. The surface is what we need gel printing plates for. The plates will make it easy for my kindergarten students all the way up to fifth graders to use.

When students get to use materials that are brand new to them, they become immersed in the creative process.

Their work and excitement shows during, and even months and years after they have created the artwork. I still have students talk about out of the ordinary projects they have done with me many years ago. I believe this will be one of those lessons that will be remembered for years to come. The gel printing plates will be used by applying ink to them in a design or pattern. What is different about these plates is that they stick to the table. When they are stable the artist is able to create a design with ease and confidence. I am looking forward to working with this material with all my classes. I hope you will help me achieve this by donating funds. I guarantee it will be used and loved by my students!
