Printing Around the World: Exploring Culture Through Art

My Project

Our school is a Title I school in East New York, Brooklyn. My Art Stars are creative, fun, and curious little artists. They love to draw, paint, color, and sculpt. I would love to introduce them to a new medium, printmaking, with the help of this project.

This project will fund two multicultural printmaking units that celebrate artistic traditions from around the world.

To bring these lessons to life, we need brayers, ink, foam sheets, and inking plates—the essential tools for successful printmaking. These materials will allow students to experience authentic printmaking techniques and take pride in professional-looking results.

In one unit, 4th-grade students will study the Adinkra symbols of Ghana, exploring how these designs communicate wisdom, community, and identity. Students will create their own foam print blocks inspired by Adinkra, experimenting with color, pattern, and meaning.

In the second unit, 5th-grade students will learn about radial design and symmetry through patterns inspired by mandalas and Portuguese Azulejos (ceramic tiles). They will design circular prints that reflect balance and unity, using repeating patterns to create stunning final prints.
