Print Their Words, Watch Them Soar

My students need funding for the printing of one issue of the school newspaper.

Newspapers may be dying across the country. But they are very much alive at my school, where each year 25 students share their voices in print. I teach seventh and eighth grade journalism at an urban public school that draws children from all over the city. Students who participate in journalism wake up early, work on the newspaper before the regular school days begins, and interrupt their lunch hour when deadline approaches.

Why? These young people are writing their hearts out because they want to tell their stories and their community's stories. And they want people to listen. However, printing a newspaper is a costly endeavor. The students raise some of the money by selling refreshments at the February dance. They also sell ad space to local merchants. But, that is not enough to cover the printing costs for three issues of the newspaper. At a school like this one, where many students do not have access at home to the Internet, a print newspaper is still a vital source of information and inspiration.

With school budgets in dire straits, there is little funding available for a "luxury" like a school newspaper. We need your help to bring issue number three to life. When the first issue is published, more than 1200 students and their families and one hundred staff members will read articles on topics such as: the pros and cons of the district's new computerized grading system; the outdoors club; the school's response to the flu; and a student's experience at the Junior Olympics. These young writers learn to research, write, revise, revise again, edit, and produce a publication of which they can be proud. Many students who claim to hate reading, do read the school newspaper--because it's written by their peers and it's about them. The newspaper not only shines a light on the student writers. It shines a light on the community and, sometimes, makes change happen.

Your support will ensure that the school newspaper stays in print through the end of the school year. You will help children speak up and be heard. You will make a difference for an entire school community.
