This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a group of twenty-six first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the nation. All the ​students at my school site receive free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places at which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.

Living and attending school in a highly impoverished, urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.

Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.

My Project

At this very difficult time, special education students need activities to complete on paper and not just digitally on a computer. In our special needs class we have 16 students who are now learning from home since distance learning began. The para-educator had the excellent idea of obtaining printers for students to use at home to supplement their distant learning direct instruction. The printers would be checked out to those families, just as the school Chromebook laptops have been loaned to them. At the end of the school year, the printers would be returned to the school and used in summer intervention and in the following school year.

Please give our special needs students the opportunity to continue to learn with the help of a printer at their own home.
