My students are growing up in an Alaskan whaling community inside the Arctic Circle. This is the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America. There are just over 200 students here in a village of about 900 residents. These students are strong and often independent, doing their best to learn and cope in a setting without a lot of resources available to them.
Our dream is to furnish a "calm down" area available to all students as needed to avoid meltdowns in the Arctic.
We are planning to supply this room with sensory calming activities and learning materials. We hope to provide students a place to go and "chill out" until they are ready to return to their classroom environment.
My Project
I am an elementary special education teacher in a small Alaskan village. When some of my students become overwhelmed with their school environment, we have the option to walk the halls or visit the gym in order to refocus. Our dream is to create a calm-down room with magnetic tiles, sensory pod, lap blanket, play bins, stress toys, and other sensory materials available to any student who needs a safe space to relax, take a break, and recharge until ready to return to their typical learning environment.
