Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
They warm my heart. These little, and some not so little, students of mine are the epitome of a challenge. They challenge me to teacher better, work harder and expose this gigantic world to them so that they may gain a better understanding of it. I teach in a title one school, which means that there is a high percentage of children from low-income families. They come from all over the world; Bangladesh, India, Mexico, China, Honduras, etc. My classroom is a melting pot of different cultures. They are all eager to learn and are always ready to devour anything new.
My students are my extended family; always asking questions and in the process, we educate one another, the benefits goes both ways.
Most days they greet me with a smile, and they hardly ever complain, which always amazes me. I honestly could not ask for better students.
My Project
It is with great urgency that I seek to spice up my library and only you can help! As with most teachers, I have students of different reading abilities. Some of my students speak and understand English very well. There are other that struggle to take command the English language. It has been my observation that the one genre that greatly bridges the gaps in reading are GRAPHIC NOVELS.
My students absolutely adore graphic novels, and the best thing is, when the language is challenging the pictures take over for understanding.
I couldn't ask for a more helpful genre.
My heart is in a lurch. I fear that there is an uprising approaching my classroom steps. I hear that there is talk of kids sneaking over to the next door teacher's classroom and borrowing some of her graphic novels (Oh my, I hope that she doesn't think that I neglect my students). She just received books from Donor's Choose. There are also whispers of a boycott of my library. If this is true, then I may lose the interest of my students, forever. Yes, I know. I'm dramatic.
