My Students
I am very fortunate to teach the students of this community. They are motivated, inquisitive and really enjoy collaborating when given a project. Over the past year, parents have generously donated towards my vision of introducing STEM based chemistry and biology labs involving amazing technology that is used to gather data.
The students appreciate the opportunity to use the STEM lab equipment because it allows them to use technology while collaborating and using critical thinking to produce results which help prepare them for the future.
My Project
Understanding spectral lines produced from light emitted during the excitement of electrons of noble gases, various compounds, and LED lights is a requirement of the Next Generation of Science Standards. This project is amazing because the students will be able to view and study spectral lines from any of the eight different gas tubes in the carousel power supply. This STEM based activity allows the carousel to directly connect to the student's Labquest which produces multiple graphs from their data analysis. The graphs show the spectral lines of each of the eight gases which will be NEEDED for the at home activity involving the spectroscopes.
Besides investigating the data that will be available from the carousel powering the gas tubes, the students will be using the spectroscopes as a hands-on approach which will be done in the classroom AND at home with their family!
When the students look through the handheld spectroscopes at any LED lights around the house, then similar peaks to those from the class activity will be produced. The students will show their families how to study the spectral lines seen and then use the printed graph from class as a learning template! I am asking for 10 additional spectroscopes in order to complete a class set. This is an AMAZING class and at home activity that will bring a clearer understanding to an already complicated concept. I think the families will be very impressed with their children!
