Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For a majority of my 3-5-year-old preschoolers, they have been secluded and sequestered from typical language and learning development due to the pandemic for MORE THAN HALF OF THEIR LIVES. My special education students are identified at 1.5 standard deviations below the mean for language, social emotional and/or speech development. Many of their parents are also first-time parents, who have also been confined to their homes. Introductory evidence-based studies are showing increased “cognitive” deficit scores with students entering my program (per 2020 Early Intervention data/study).

My Project

My students and their caregivers will gain lost ground through explicit instruction for both the preschoolers and their caregivers via classroom/therapeutic instruction, take-home packs, and explicit 3D language learning of core fundamental vocabulary. They will learn to identify and express emotions as well as learn about the “who, what, and where” within our community. Children identified with autism and severe language deficits have been deprived of typical life lessons due to mandatory seclusions, in some cases for over 2/3 of their lifetimes. These materials will help bridge the gap with explicit instruction both at school and via take-home activities with my Google site virtual instruction to supplement learning.
