My Students
Despite all the heavy challenges related to their autism diagnosis, my little guys just keep pushing forward and continue to knock out their learning targets left and right and doing so virtually! Whether it's "J" speaking his first words or "L" & "K" learning to sit at the table after previous months of intense screaming & crying when asked to follow directions, I'm super proud of all their accomplishments.
Children with autism are like other children in that they have interests, favorite things and people and unique little personalities.
The differences are related to the extra supports needed for learning new skills.
While I'd rather be in the classroom, my favorite part of virtual teaching is watching the parents reaction when their child has accomplished something beyond expectation. They get to see what I see in the classroom and it's the best feeling in the world. For example, when "S" learned to complete her first work/play task all by herself, her Mom's happy tears & screams of delight "spoke" a thousand words.
Both on good days and not-so-good days, I never forget how lucky I am to be their teacher.
My Project
Children with autism often don't see parts to whole or "the big picture." As a result, they frequently show high interest in the pieces of puzzles and toys, rather than the whole puzzle or toy. Hard as we try, it's sometimes a challenge to keep track of where they put the pieces and therefore they get lost.
Replenishing our puzzle supply is the focus of this project as they provide excellent vehicles for learning critical visual-perceptual-motor and cognitive skills.
Typical preschoolers learn to complete puzzles through trial and error play where my students need to be taught how to do them through step by step instruction in order for them to be able to see that big picture.
There is something for everybody's interests in this project; puzzles with pictures of high interest items such as animals, alphabet, and numbers, puzzles that make sounds and puzzles at different ability levels.
