My Students

Hi there!

My school is launching a brand new 3s program as a part of the Pre-K for all program in NYC.

My students are all coming to school for the very first time, and I want to make their experience really unique and special.

Because this is a public school 3K class, the children range in age from 2-3 years old for the fall. This means that we need specific supplies that are responsive to their age and abilities. We are also an ICT inclusion classroom, so our kids all have really varied interests, abilities, attention spans, and language development. Since most of these kids were born just 1 year before the pandemic, they have very limited experience with social interactions and group play. This means they have also spent a lot of time playing indoors alone, so we want to boost their gross motor and cooperative play skills as much as possible.

Because our students are so varied and unique, we want to be able to offer equally unique toys and experiences that we otherwise don't have access to.

My Project

The students in our class are vastly varied across all identity strands. We have studied our skin colors; we've talked about all the different beautiful shades of brown and black we see in our skin and hair. However, we want to dig deeper into other identity strands that are age-appropriate for 3 and 4-year-olds. We will ask questions like "Who is in my family?" and "What are our bodies are learning to do?" and "What is my gender?" These books in our classroom library will help us explore these topics more. One of the most foundational concepts for teaching justice and equity to young children is to learn about how people are different from you and how these differences are what makes our community special. We also explore how, no matter how we are different, we all belong in our community. We also added a few of our favorite fiction books to read as well!
