Career and Technical Education is such an exciting and enjoyable area to teach in. Seeing high school students get up and get moving with the opportunity to learn by being actively involved rather than rote learning from a textbook is so powerful.
My students are engaged, excited and thrilled to have hands on experiences in the classroom.
They love that they can create, learn and challenge themselves while practicing skills they will use everyday of their life. It doesn't hurt that they get to sample the products they make.
My classroom is a culinary classroom in which the students learn basic food production skills ranging from kitchen equipment, food safety and knife skills to soups, sauces, protein production, starches and breads and more. We take the skills we learn in class and cater in our community. I love seeing the students step up and become leaders while working the different jobs. Putting 21st century skills such as problem solving, teamwork and communication into practical applications is so important for these students today and tomorrow.
My Project
We continually use kitchen appliances in our culinary class and at this time we only have three Kitchen Aids for our six kitchens. This means that students are having to take turns and often do not get their product done in the time we have.
Being able to engage all students at the same time would increase production, make all labs run smoothly and allow students equal experiences.
This equipment will enable equal learning and the best way to learn cooking skills and food production is to have actual hands on experiences. Seeing students make breads, desserts and foods they love is such a joy!
