My students need and will benefit greatly from the purchase of the Elmo document presenter. This will improve writing, critical thinking, and hands on learning opportunities exponentially. This means that students will be able to receive instant feedback on their own writing, examine a text or work of art as an entire class, or display visual aids when they are presenting. Overall, the Elmo would be at the heart of much of what we do in a student-centered classroom.
I have the wonderful job of teaching high school students. My course load includes, but is not limited to:
*Senior English/Humanities- Teaching students to think critically for the real world and present those ideas in both an oral and written manner.
*Sophomore English/Humanities- Teaching American literature as well as the fundamentals of grammar.
*Speech- Teaching students to communicate and listen actively while taking into account audience, intent, and appropriateness.
*Contemporary Fiction- Teaching literature that is often over-looked in high school curriculum because it is not canonical.
We have over 30% free/reduced lunch at our school. The building is forty years old and does not have air conditioning. My classroom, as you can tell from the picture, does not have windows but instead we rely on fans I purchased. We face staff and supply (paper, ink, etc.) shortages each year. Frankly, all of this adds up to hurt student morale.
The Elmo would alleviate a lot of the paper limitations I face in the classroom. In addition, when hooked with the LCD projector I will supply, gives students a lot more opportunity for immediate learning as well as the chance to work with technologies that are far more common in suburban schools and colleges.
With your help, I can guarantee that my students will leave this high school with a strong, valuable, and useful education that prepares them for the world beyond these walls. My students will know how to write effectively for a variety of purposes (academia, professional, personal, etc.) and, more importantly, will be confident enough to be actively engaged in their communities and professions.
