Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are ready to learn! I teach in an English Immersion Pre-K class, and most of my students are in school for the very first time.
Almost all of my students speak a language other than English at home, which makes our classroom wonderfully diverse!
I believe that a student's zip code shouldn't dictate the quality of their education, and I know that my students deserve the best start possible in school. My students are learning new vocabulary words every day, and all of my students learn best through hands-on experiences. Four-year-olds love to touch, move, and explore, and I need more resources for my students to explore their world!
My Project
My students are always curious about science and social studies, and I would love to be able to give them more resources to learn from! These Scholastic Let's Find Out magazines, similar to the Weekly Readers we all had as kids, cover a different science or social studies topic each week, including subjects like friendships, pumpkins, Martin Luther King Jr, penguins, and seasons. My kids have loved these in the past, and I'd love to have the chance to use them this year!
Having subscriptions in both English and Spanish will allow my ELL students to read these magazines at home with their families in their home language.
Most of my students come from families that have recently emigrated to the US or are immigrants themselves, and I would love to have materials in Spanish for families to read with their children at home! Having these magazines will help students build vocabulary in English and Spanish, along with learning important early literacy concepts and building a love for reading. With these magazines, my students and their families will build a love for school and will build important literacy skills!
