Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is filled with enthusiastic & bright Pre-K children who just happen to be diagnosed with Autism. Each morning I pick them up from the school bus gate & we chug, chug, chug all the way to our classroom, noticing trees, spiders, webs, & school employees who have become our friends. What fun!

I am excited to be their teacher and explore the world together.

Each child is unique and brings amazing gifts to our classroom. It is my hope that I can find new ways to tap into these gifts and provide them with multiple experience for growth. One thing that I've noticed is how intrigued my students get when I incorporate technology into our day. Every time I bring in my iPad they want to help me press the screen in order to activate their favorite song, story or game that I've downloaded. Unfortunately because of their age (3 years old) and because many of them do not have siblings - sharing and taking turns can often be quite difficult. The fact that my students also have Autism can play a factor in a their frustration and often makes waiting stressful. Although these are important skills to learn, it would be so helpful to have a few more iPads so that more students can participate while they are still acquiring patience and an understanding of others needs.

My Project

The iPads I am requesting would be used by my students. Some of the activities I am excited to incorporate would be those that encourage communication and language. Many of my students are unable to respond verbally and require tools where they can point to what they want or express their needs in another way. They also require new vocabulary in order to communicate. In addition, I have a few English Language Learners in my class. Being able to download and play books, songs and games in both English and Spanish would benefit these students immensely. I have also requested a printer and toner. These items would be used by me and my aides when to take pictures of our children while learning. The pictures would be printed out to provide visual aides for our students. Additional photos and videos would be used to show parents and support staff evidence of the students' abilities and growth. It will help me to assess their needs as well.

My students' families exist at or below the poverty level. Most receive free lunch & most do not have a computer at home.Communication can be tough at times. However, just last month we had Back to School Night & all of my families showed up!

My run was packed! The principal couldn't believe it & told me..."special needs classrooms never have that good of a turn out".This told me how much my parents care about their children.Help me provide these students with the tools they need to have a voice.
