Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We're getting ready for kindergarten! That means learning our letters, numbers and sight words. It also means exploring the world around us and learning to problem solve. Will you help us become little engineers?
My 23 Pre-K students are four and five years old, and absolutely love doing everything they can by themselves.
They are eager to learn and hard working, and absolutely such a joy to be around.
My students attend a small, urban school in Maryland. Despite the conditions of our school, they are engaging, loving and so excited to learn and interact with their world. My group is representative of our school as a whole; we have a very diverse population of students. Four different languages are spoken in my classroom alone; yet we all love each other so much. My students are all a group of loving friends who truly care about each other and their learning. They work so well together and really help one another with their school work.
My Project
I'm requesting two items to help my students learn vital problem solving skills while exploring the scientific method. The first item is a set of three literacy-based engineering kits. Each kit poses an engineering problem based on famous fairy tales, and the students must plan and create a solution (such as finding appropriate chairs for Goldilocks!). The second item is a journal for my students to incorporate writing into their scientific exploration. Together, these two items will blend important early literacy skills such as reading and writing and life skills like problem solving, planning and exploration.
Without a science curriculum and materials, it can be very difficult to provide my students with age-appropriate exposure to necessary science concepts. These kits will be a very fun and engaging, all-encompassing science curriculum that integrates the arts and social skills. I am so excited at the thought of having these items be in our classroom!
By receiving these items, my young learners will be given meaningful and developmentally appropriate exposure to science, while incorporating vital life skills and literacy.
These engineering kits will help my students learn valuable lessons about balance, weight, planning and experimentation. All the while, they will further explore beloved fairy tales and get to practice their writing skills, just as they would in the real world.
Help us grow into little engineers! Thank you!
