PreKindergarteners will learn to grow a garden from seeds to plants. The students benefit by hands-on exploration and experimentation with the earth's natural resources. These at-risk students reside in a community with high need, low income, single parent households in Illinois.

Years ago, young children where taught gardening by their parents. Young children today do not have the same advantage because their parents lack planting space, interest, and understanding of gardening. Some day it may become necessary to grow their food or explore a career in agriculture. In my classroom, a play garden was arranged for students to use during their work time. During a conversation at play, several students were talking and asked me questions; "How can I make a flower?" and "Where do flowers come from?". Some students created flowers using small pattern blocks and said to me, "I made this for you, teacher." These are some examples of their interest in flowers and plants. (Some vegetable planting would be encouraged also.) Due to budget cuts, the school will not fund special projects such as this.

The resources that are needed include Gardening kits, an Indoor garden stand, Science Habitat Center, Root-Vue kit, Tools for planting, Books relating to gardening for the student library and Curriculum relating to planting. Students will benefit from understanding and exploring basic gardening while gaining an appreciation of the earth's natural resources.

With the support and generosity of donors, this project can begin to make a difference in the lives of young children by providing them with some basic knowledge and appreciation of horticulture, agriculture, and the earth sciences.
